Project: CSAC Archive Extension
Date: 2024
Location: Parma, IT
Scale: Large
The project is an extension of the Centro Studi e Archivio della Comunicazione (CSAC) of the University of Parma, situated within the historical context of the Certosa di Parma. It responds to the saturation of existing archive storage while introducing functions missing from the site. The design draws from the recurring square geometry present in both the building form and the surrounding urban fabric. A massive, completely blind concrete volume appears to float above a thin band of glass, creating a strong contrast with the historic abbey while remaining respectful of the established spatial hierarchy.
The outcome is driven by a pragmatic design approach focused on modularity, ease of use, and minimal yet efficient architectural interventions. Given the large scale of the project, particular attention is paid to compressing spaces to a human scale through a tight rhythm of simple forms, punctuated by occasional heavy elements. This strategy strengthens the overall composition and heightens the cognitive and atmospheric impact of the space. The square is selected as the fundamental design unit due to its ability to tessellate in both two- and three-dimensional space and to perform effectively under gravitational constraints, making it the core building block of the project.
